Week 2 | Day 5 | Activity 3: Choose your Own | Summer Learning Journey

Pania Newton: Pania Newton is the leader of the S.O.U.L (Save, Our, Unique, Landscape) group. Pania had only just completed her degree in Law at Auckland University. Pania and her cousins created the S.O.U.L group to protest against a building company. Pania wanted no construction or structures built on the land, so she protest against it. The land was sacret. Pania wants the government to buy the land back trusting that the land could be preserved for all New Zealanders to maintain its hystorical events. I think that this impacts people in a positive way, incouraging them to always make sure to fight for what you believe.

LI: To chose a person that has a positive impact on others and talk about them.

For this activity we had to chose a politician or activist and write about them. We had to provide their name, a discription of their work they do/have done and an explanation of how their work has had an impact on others. I picked Pania Newton who is the leader of the S.O.U.L group. She protests to not let any building companies create structures on the untouched land. I enjoyed this activity.

  2. Hi Farzana

This is a very current topic. I have been out to the site that they are trying to save. It is a very interesting location and would be sad to see it covered in houses. The SOUL group are very strong and much comes from the leadership of Pania Newton.

This issue will no doubt go on for some time so you will be able to continue to watch the future developments of their campaign

  3. Tālofa Lava Farzana,

Well done on making it to your final activity of week 2! You should be very proud of all the hard work you have been doing this summer, you will be very surprised at how easy it will be to slip back into school work when you go back in a few weeks!

What an awesome post you have put together today, I really enjoyed reading the profile you have written up about Pania Newton. She is a very inspirational lady, and has encouraged so many people to fight for what they believe in like you have said.

I don’t really know too much about her, but I have learned a lot about her today thanks to you. What inspired you to write about her today for this activity?

  5. Hi Farzana,
I liked how you explained who Pania Newton is, what the name SOUL means and what their goal is. I found it interesting that they wanted to stop the construction of something on a land site, do you think their actions were justified?

  6. Greetings Farzana! You have some really good info on Pania...and it's also really interesting to learn about what's currently happening with the protesting, etc...What are your thoughts on it? Things like this always have more than one opinion. Nice work!
