What is making connections?

LI. To learn what making connections is. This week for reading we had to create a DLO that explains what making connections is. I used my prior knowledge to get the information. Making connections is comparing a text to what you have experienced in life.

Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa | Samoan Language Week

LI. To make a DLO about Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa (Samaon Language Week). Today we had to create a DLO in LS2 about a topic about the Samoan culture. We had to work in groups of four. In my group there was- Savelina, Victoria, Nickaela and I. We worked together to provide a lot of information about Tatau which is the Samoan way of saying 'Tatto'. We each chose a topic to do about Tatau, I chose 'Men & Women'. We could use a app to make the DLO, so we did it on a slide presentation. First Miss Anderson had to discussed the culture with us so we can have a bit more comprehension about Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa.

Digestive system

LI. To define digestion. This week for Inquiry we had to finish the compulsory tasks. Victoria and I did this presentation. I used my research skills in order to find some of the information. We explained two of the related organs that help the digestive system such as- Liver, and Kidney. The kidneys wash the blood and take all the waste products from the blood into the gallbladder which gets stored then released.

Earthworm digestive system

The earthworm digestive system is a complex cycle, the cycle starts with- prostomium, pharynx, esophagus, crop, gizzard, intestine, and anus. A digestive system is a group of organs or body parts helping something or someone digest the food they have been given or eating.

Earthworms swallow food through the mouth. A flap, called the prostomium under the mouth holds the worm’s food in.

The food travels down to the pharynx. It gets lubricated in mucous, which makes it slimy and slick.

The slimy food travels down the esophagus. It gets mixed with calcium carbonate which neutralizes the acid.

The crop is a storage zone. The slicky food gets mixed together again.

The gizzard churns and mixes the food. The gizzard churns the food for the earthworms because they have no teeth to grind the food themselves; in the food there is very tiny rocks and sand grains that helps grind the food, also a chemical digestion starts in the gizzard.

The paste then travels to the intestine. The volume of the earthworm body is made up of the intestine, the food passes through the earthworm and intestine, while it travels through kind of bacteria starts to break food down, so the blood vessels that line the intestine can take in the nutrients into parts of the body.

When all the waste travels to the end of the intestine the anus will take all the waste out so it can be a healthy earthworm. It will release its urine, the digestive system’s style is a complex cycle or system.

Prostomium covers mouth, food in pharynx, into esophagus, crop stores food, gizzard churns food, travels intestine, exits anus.

This process or cycle is like the human digestive system because humans have acid in the stomach that breaks down the food or chunks we have not chewed.
LI. To compare digestion in humans and other living organisms. This week for inquiry we had to finish the compulsory tasks. I wrote a eighteen sentence explanation because we did this for writing. We did the earthworm digestive system. I think the earthworm digestive system is complex. I got one credit for my group, we now have sixteen credits in total.

The Digestive System
LI. To describe the stuctures and perspective functions in the human digestive system. This week for inquiry we had to finish the compulsory tasks. I drew the digestive system and tried my best. I got two credits for The Quizzers which is my group. We are now on to sixteen credits. My group is trying to get twenty five credits so each one of us can buy one question.

Digestive System Word Ring

LI. To explain what the main organs in the digestive system do. This week for inquiry we had to finish the compulsory tasks. Mojtaba, Matthew, Lukah, and Victoria did this activity. They got two credits for this. We had to write the main organs in the circle and the out it the more unrelated the organs are. We colored the circle in our favourite colors. Mojtabas favourite color is red, Matthews favourite color is cyan, Victorias favourite color is baige and Lukahs favourite green. Then we had to write a description.

Commenting

Today I decided to comment on Karlos's 'nerves' blogpost. I like how he had provided a lot of information. My suggestion was to move the two images down so I can see the text. Besides that it was perfect. Here is the link to his blogpost and my comment -

Earthworm digestive system

LI. To write a eighteen sentence explanation. This week for writing we had to write a eighteen sentence explanation about how the earthworm digestive system works and the steps of the process. First Mr. Wong wrote a paragraph about the pharynx, then we got into our groups and then write a paragraph about the esophagus. We also had to write a statement and explanation in order to get a decent paragraph. We had to use a planner to plan the explanation.

Maori

Today we had Maori. Whae Odie came into LS1 and then taught us a new song. Then she gave us a sheet of paper to draw the faces of a person cold, hot, angry and good. I tried to make it detailed but it is not that detailed. We could color in the persons. It was a fun activity!

Keywords list Super senses

Keywords List Super Senses

LI. To identify keywords in a text. This week for reading we had to write a list of words from the article 'Super Senses', we wrote down the keywords in the doc. Then we had to make a sentence using the keywords we found. We had to read the article and then summarise the article. This activity was fun although it was hard and challenging. The article was about dolphins, dung beetles and dogs, what their super senses are and how they use it. Dolphins have a good sense at finding where things are they use echolocation to do this. Dung beetles have super-sized sense as well, they can walk in a straight line in the dark by using the Milky Way, the Milky Way is a group of stars in a line. Dogs can sense scent, they use their nose to do this.

Volume and Capacity

LI. To measure volume and capacity. This week for maths we had to measure the volume and capacity for items that we picked around LS1. We could do this activity with a partner or by ourselves, I perfered a partner so I worked with Sakina. We had to estimate the height , width, and depth. We had to use our place value and basic facts in order to get the answer, we also had to think about what we are doing in order to get an estimation correct which is guessing. I had lots of fun with this activity although it was challenging.

Friday 18 May 2018

Searching Skills

LI. To use keywords to search for information suitable for the purpose and reading level. This week for cybersmart we had to create a DLO with the things that we searched up. We had to take screenshots of the results and put in on the DLO. I searched up 'jellyfish brain' and jellyfish cns' and good results came. Searching up 'jellyfish brain' is better than searching up questions like 'do jellyfish have brain?' because if you search that up it will come up as different things that might not be related to the topic.

Measurement & Length

LI. To make estimates lengths and areas. This week for maths we had to measure four items. We had to estimate first and then measure the actual items and then convert it two times. We had to use a meter stick or meter wheel. All of Mr. Ogilvies groups had to know about the place value house in order to get the answers faster and easier. This activity was challenging but fun.

Kiwi Sport- Rippa Rugby

Explanation Planner

LI. To compare explanations with information reports. This week for writing we had to write a ten sentence explanation about the process of the aluminium cans. The differences to a explanation and a information report are that the explanation tells people about how something works and why it happens and a information report tells people facts about a topic.

Sensitivity- MRS GREN

LI. To define sensitivity and describe the structures and respective functions in the human nervous
system.

This week for Inquiry we had to do tasks that is based on sensitivity. We had to do the elictive and the
compulsory tasks in order to get credits so we can buy questions. At the end of the term LS1 is going to
have a quiz which is based on ‘Living things’, if we get five or more credits we can buy a question which
will allow us to buy questions for the quiz to win at the end of the term. The Quizzers (us) in total have
nine credits which means we can buy one question, if we have one more credit we can buy two questions
for the quiz. We are called ‘The Quizzers’ because we like quizzes and we like winning quizzes. Our
group contains the following people- Victoria, Farzana, Matthew, Lukah and Mojtaba. We chose these
groups because everyone in the group is good at different things. Victoria is good at blogging, Farzana is
good at multitasking and getting things done fast, Matthew is good at , Lukah is good at drawing, and
Mojtaba is good at helping people.

Keywords and Reminders

LI. To identify the keywords in a text. This week for reading we had to find keywords in a text and use a template that Mr. Wong had created. He told us to get a book to based on the nervous system and find keywords. We had to write the keywords and then make one sentence with all the keywords we could find. The sentence couldn't copy the book so we had to make our own sentence. It was very fun. Although it was hard and challenging. I tried my best to find more information about the nervous system to get all the rows finished but unfortunatly i could not, but I did try to get it completed.

Commenting

Today I decided to comment on Sandra's 'How to wrte an explanation' DLO. I liked the way she put what she will need for an explanation. I think the DLO will remind her to write an explanation. I did the activity too. She put a lot of effort and information in the DLO. I asked her if she liked making the DLO.
Here is her blog link- Explanation

Nervous System

Nervous System

A nervous system is a cell called neuron that sends your brain a message, and then the brain thinks then
give a response to the nerves and tells you what to do. Every organism has a nervous system and some
organisms don’t have a nervous system and you call that placozoans and mesozoans. For example

Placozoa don’t have brains but they still can sense, some animals have a PNS but some don’t have a
CNS like, shrimps, lobsters, and crabs and mollusks. However humans have both a CNS and PNS, we
also have nerves as well as a spinal cord and all the body parts in a CNS and PNS. Fun Fact: There are
100 billion neurons in your brain alone. I will be describing- What a nervous system is. How it works.
Why you need nerves.

Nerves carry the message to your brain and the brain has to think of a response fast. There are two parts
in the nervous system called the CNS (central nervous system) and the PNS (peripheral nervous system),

the central nervous system includes the nerves, brain, and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system
include the eyes, ears, mouth, nose, somatic and autonomic systems. If something or someone touches
you your nerves will sense it and send a message to the brain to get a response, however in hazardous

situations the nerves will skip the brain part and then go back down to the body part to tell the body part

to get your arm away from the substance or object.

What are nerves?
Nerves are specialized cells or fibres that carry messages to or from your brain to get a response about
the five senses either: touch, taste, sound, sight, and smell. Nerves are fibres in the body that transfers
impulses of sensation to the brain or spinal cord, and impulses from these to the muscles and organs
in the human body or other bodys.
How do nerves work?
The nervous system has two parts, called the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system
due to their location in the body. The central nervous system includes the nerves in the brain and spinal
cord. It does this by receiving signals from the brain and passing them on to the body.
What do nerves help you with?
Nerves help you with a reaction or to move. Your spinal cord receives information from the skin,
joints and muscles of your body. It also carries the nerves that control all your movements which is
part of the seven life processes. Your brain is the most complicated part of your nervous system.
Why do you need nerves?
The nervous system uses electrical and chemical means to help all parts of the body to communicate with
each other. The brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system. Nerves everywhere else in
the body are part of the peripheral nervous system.
Where are your nerves?
The brain and spinal cord form the control center known as the central nervous system, where information
is evaluated and decisions made. The sensory nerves and sense organs of the peripheral nervous system
monitor.

Nerves are specialized cells called neurons that help you carry the message to or from the brain.
There are two parts in your nervous system called the CNS and the PNS, which stands for Central
Nervous System and Peripheral Nervous System. We have more nerve cells than the stars of Milky Way.
We all as humans cannot live without nerves. The Nervous System is like the Organ System.

Kiwi Can

Today at kiwi can we learnt about integrity, and making good choices. When ever I make good choices I feel super happy because I like being nice to people. After having a little chat about making the right choices we got into our energizer called Opposite game. We had to use integrity which means being honest and doing the right thing when no one is looking. We had to do the opposite of Miss. Lily. I got out really easily. For the third round I concentrated, Diana and I were the last two people but unfortunately I lost. The other game was called Terminator Tag. Everyone was in for this game. I got out really easily. If someone tags you and you tag someone else you will have to do rock, paper, scissors. After we played terminator tag we talked more about integrity and making the right choices. Integrity is doing the right thing when no one is looking, and being honest.

All about me (in maori)

LI. To talk about yourself in Maori. Today we had Maori, first Whia Odie told us to make a presentation. Then she told us to talk about ourselves in Maori. She told us to write who we are, where we live, our mum and dad, our siblings, and our school. You will se the answers on the presentation. I enjoyed creating this presentation because I got to learn how to talk about myself in Maori.

Nervous System

LI. To search for research  materials appropriate for our reading level. This week we had to create a DLO answering the following questions- What is a nerve?, What do nerves do?, and How do nerves work? We had to research the questions and answer the meaning in our own words. We had to have good research skills in order to find true information about nerves. There is two parts in a nervous system called CNS and PNS. CNS stands for Central Nervous System, and PNS stands for Periphal Nervous System. I learnt a lot of things during the lesson.

The Divider

LI. To learn how to split numbers to get the answer. This week for maths Mr. Ogilvie introduced 'The Divider' to his maths groups. We had to go on the website pick an equation then solve it by splitting the numbers. I solved 40 divided by 2 = 20, because 20 divided by 2 = 10 and if you do that twice you will get the total of 10 each time and if you add that together the answer will be 20. I think the divider is really helpful for me because I don't know all of my division facts, the divider is very useful because you have to split the equation to get a total.

Kiwi Sport

Today we had kiwi sport. First we lined up outside and went to the field. When we got there
Mr. Ogilvie taught us the rules and where we stop the ball with and where we kick the ball with.
Then we had to get into groups of four I was with Charlize, Kaitlyn, and Hinemoa. We had to
make a square and then pass the ball with our instep. When we did that Mr. Ogilvie gave one
person in each team a bib. We had to create a square again, but the person with a bib has to get
the ball of you. I got the ball of Hinemoa and then we switched she got the bib I got no bib.
After we did that Mr. Ogilvie told us to sit on the concrete to tell us more about Football. Thenwe played a game of soccer. I was in the non bibs team. We ran to ball as fast as we could. Alazai was so close to scoring a goal for his team but he missed two times. The bibs team scored one goal. After that Spelman scored a goal for my team. It was close to impossible to score a goal because everyone was following the ball but I don’t mind. Next time we play Football I suggest people should spread around instead of follow the ball. At the end it was a draw, but everyone tried their very best. We were all hot and exhausted. Finally we went back for group B to play Football.  All of us were happy because we tried and we all won. Today was a fun day. I was happy we all won and tried.

MRS GREN

LI. To learn MRS GREN and understand the meaning of the 7 Life processes. This term for inquiry we are doing "What's Living?" and we are learning about organisms. The class learnt about MRS GREN which is used to help remember the 7 life processes. The 7 life processes are - Movement, Resperation, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduce, Excretion, and Nutrition. We had to create a google slide about MRS GREN. We could work independently, in a pair or maximum 3 people. I worked in a group of 3 with Sakina and Victoria. In the google slide we include attributed images and a good description about each life processes with the help of some sites. This is my first time learning about MRS GREN and the 7 life processes.

Smart Commenting

LI. To write positive, thoughtful and helpful comments. This week for cyber smart we had to comment on 2-3 peoples blogposts. First we had to learn about the three words that will help us give advanced feed back to the creator, the words are: Postive, Thoughtful, and Helpful. We had to think of examples for commenting. Mr. Wong used Vayan's DLO for an example. When we did that Mr. Wong put our names on the board and chose 2-3 people for us to comment on. Everyone choose one person and Mr. Wong choose the rest. I had to comment on Xavier's DLO, Afatia's DLO, and Hinemoa's DLO.  In the comment we had to have a greeting, making deep connections, something that you liked about someone's blogpost, questions, something helpful, and something nice at the end like Keep up the great work or Nice job.
Here is the links to their blogs-
Xavier's blogpost
Afatia's blogpost
Hinemoa's blogpost

Kei te pehea koe?

LI. To learn how to translate maori words to english. This week for Maori we had to create a google sheet translating Maori words that Whaea Ode gave us. The words are feelings. The words were- Pouri, Koa, Aio, Tuwiri, Riri, Pairiri, Mamae, Manahau, Aumoe, Amaimai, Kukokikoki, Manaaki, Mataku, and Hoha, and the translation is- Sad, Elated, Peaceful, Afraid, Furious, Upset, Hurt, Cheerful, Comfortable, Nervous, Cranky, Care, Fearful, and Bored.

Maths: The Multiplier

LI. This week for maths we did an activity that is called 'The Multiplier' it is an activity that helps LSI learn our basic multiplication facts well and fast. I used The Multiplier by answering the multiplication equations that I don’t know. The equation I used was 82 x 6. I split the numbers in 4 quarters.I split the numbers in that way because it is easier for me to solve. It was the easiest way because I know my three times table.I could show that in a diagram by inserting a picture and making a description to it. The Multiplier helps me multiply my equations faster and it also makes it easier for me to solve the equation and have the right answer.

Type of text

LI. To asses authors purpose and determine the reliability of information given in the text. This week for reading we had to make a DLO answering questions. We had to see if the websites are either: Procedural, Explanation, Information report, Narrative, Persuasive, and Recount. The DLO had to have either a audio or voice recording. We had to answer these questions- What type of text is it, What is the purpose of the text, Who is the target audience, Is the source of information reliable for learning about healthy food and eating.
