Jupiter | Inquiry

LI: To find out if a human can stay alive on a planet.

We had to make a poster about a planet and find out if a human can live on that planet in the next 200 years or so. We had to do it in groups, I was with Fau & Charlize. We chose the planet Jupiter. You can't live on Jupiter because you can get crushed by the atmosphere and because Jupiter doesn't sustain three of the main elements for life.

Oreintation | Dialogue | Writing

LI: To write a narrative in the form of a play.

We had to finish of our storyboards then make an orientation to describe the setting and introduce the characters. After that we had to start with making our dialogue. We did this in partners, and I was with Alayah. We chose the characters Lisa and Lucie. Our play is about a Leprechaun stealing a teenage girls jewelry. They go on an adventure to find the missing jewelry. One of their friends or so they thought turned his back on the friend group and was with the Leprechaun all along. They pursuade the evil friend named Noah. At the end of the story they find the jewelry without the Leprechaun finding out.

Kiwi Sport | Gymnastics

LI: To increase our flexibility, strength & balance.

LS1 group A went to the hall to participate in our gymnastics session with Steven. Steven was gone for two weeks so he expected us to not be the best. We had three rotations which were the:

1. Balance station - In the balance station we had to go on a beam and kick forward then backwards, we had to do a cartwheel along a long blue beam, after that we did a frontwards roll on a thick beam, lastly we did bunny hops along another beam.

2. Strength station -  On the parallel bars we had to do the tuck shape and the L shape while on the bars, on two stairs flipped on their sides we had to go on it and do light swinging, we had to do the front/side/back support, on a bar we had to do a handstand with the support of the wall and on the bars we had to do little swings on it.

3. Postition station - On a 90° angled triangle we had to do the back roll, on a blue long mat we had to do a handstand then front roll then another handstand, on a springboard we had to do one straight jump, on a mini trampoline we had to do a dive roll.

I enjoyed this session on Gynmastics back with Steven.

Reading | Making Connections | Synthesis

LI: To build vocabulary and make connections.

Making connections is a reading strategy we use to understand a text. Synthesis is also a reading strategy used for the same thing. We gathered information, did the synthesis DLO and then made connection to the story we were reading. I enjoyed this task.

Cleaning our Drives | Cybersmart

LI: To organise our drives properly.

LS1 was organising their drives to save time later on in the year. This would help us because if we make files we can put it in our folder that is appropriate for the file. We also don't have to waste time to organise our files in the future. If we organise our drive in the following year we can make other folders.

Decimal Numbers

LI: To add and subtract decimals by place value and check using written algorithm.

Decimals are numbers higher than zero but lower than a solid number. In our maths groups we were adding and subtracting decimal numbers. To add a decimal numbers you need to add the lowest numbers first. For example 2.32 + 1.20, I will add the two and the zero which are at the right hand side. 2 + 0 = 2. Then you make your way up to the left. 3 + 2 = 5. 2 + 1 = 3. After adding them put it into the right place. 2.32 + 1.20 = 3.52. To subtract decimal numbers you have to subtract the lowest number first like the adding one. 2.38 - 1.28. 8 - 8 = 0. 3 - 2 = 1. 2 - 1 = 1. Put them into the right place. 1.10 or 1.1. I liked adding and subtracting decimal numbers.

African Drumming

LI: To learn about African Drumming.

Johnny from Rhythm Interative taught us four different rythms on the djembe. Johnny taught us by singing and clapping the rhythm for us to copy. One of the call and return tunes was "I like chocolate cake" , "So do I".

Johnny teaches a message to children. That message is that "together we can make a change". I have enjoyed drumming with Johnny.

Ki O Rahi | Interschool

LI: To play Ki O Rahi and have fun.

Some people from PBS went down to Dunkirk Park to take part in the Ki O Rahi interschool. It was our first interschool on Ki O Rahi so we focused on having fun instead of having a competitive game.

Our first game was against Tamaki Primary. We lost against TPS by 9 to 3. We had fun with the first game. After TPS we played against St Patrick. We won against St Patricks by 13 to 4. It was a friendly game. We then played against Te Puao team 1. We had won by 12 to 4. Then we played against Te Puao team 2. We lost by 5 to 3. After Te Puao we went against Stanhope. We won by 13 to 9. Our last game was against Stonefields and won 5 to 3. Overall we won four games and lost two. Our team enjoyed this opportunity to take part in the Ki O Rahi interschools.

Commenting

LI: To give a person feedback.

Today I decided to comment on Tauas blogpost about cats. He didn't have enough information about what he did and what he learnt. I enjoyed commenting and giving feedback to Taua.

Basic Facts Boxes

LI: To learn your basic facts.

Today I have decided to do the basic facts boxes up to 20 and I did the speed demon challenge. My time that I got was 3 minutes and 12 seconds. I think I did good but I hope I get better with it. It isn't really challenging for me. I enjoyed doing the basic facts boxes.

SSR Selfie

LI: To summarise and retell a text.

My book that I read was Matter and how it changes. It explained the three basic states of matter which are solids, liquids & gases. I enjoyed reading this book.

Zoo Trip

LI: To learn more about animals.

Serval Cats:
When we got to the zoo we went with Hahepa our zoo instructor. We looked at the Serval cats first which are really good jumpers. They come from Africa and like resting a lot. For their BE (Behavior Enrichment) they have a pole and the zoo keepers put some meat on top of the pole. The cats jump to get the meat from the pole.

Cheetahs:
Next we saw some Cheetahs, they are the fastest mammal. They have a tree which is their BE. Cheetahs can run 100km/h for 30 seconds and they can't retract their paws unlike other animals. To help the Cheetahs run are their claws which they dig inside the dirt to keep themselves steady. The tails help with the changing direction and balancing when they are trying to catch their prey. We got to feel a real Cheetah skin that got confiscated at the airport because someone tried to bring it in the country. They don't need to practise running because they are cats and cats like to rest all the time. The zoo keepers can't contact with the Cheetahs.

Elephants:
After that we saw two Elephants named Angele and Burma. Angele is from Sri Lanka and Burma is from Burma/Myanmar. Their BE is a sack with hay inside and painting. They are both Asian Elephants. Most poachers want their tusks to hang on their wall. They eat veggies and fruit but they are on a hay diet. The Elephants poo can be made into paper because they are carnivors.

Flamingo:
Flamingo's usually eat with their strainers in their beaks. They eat small insects inside the water. Two species of Flamingos are native to Africa, Asia and Europe.

Rhino & Nyala:
Poachers want a Rhinos horn which are made out of hair and fingernails. Nyalas have two horns and look like a goat.

I really enjoyed learning about animals. We saw other animals like: Penguins, Giraffes, Otters, Spider monkeys and really noisy Parrots.

Making Connections | Reading | Synthesis

LI: To build vocabulary and make connections.

Making connections is a reading strategy we use to connect with the text. Synthesis is another reading strategy to get a new understanding of the text. We had to finish of three DLO's but since Mr. Ogilvie wasn't here for two days our work is in progress (WIP). We activated our prior knowledge then put down the new information that we learnt.

Identifying Decimals | Maths

LI: To identify and count thenths, hundredths, and thousandths.

A decimal is higher than 0 but less that 1 or a full number. These are examples of decimals: 1.7 or 1.2. To do the must do we had to learn how to say the decimals. You might think that 25.847 is pronounced: twenty five point eight hundred and fourty seven but it is actually pronounced twenty five point eight four seven. On the slide we had to answer the words on the decimal number, the fraction, the number before, the number after and the photo. I enjoyed this activity.

Hiwi the Kiwi | Fishing for the Future

LI: To be responsible in the sea when fishing.

Hiwi the Kiwi came to our school to teach us how to be responsible when it comes to the sea/ocean. We learnt about the legal fish size and how a Snapper fish has to be 30 cm long for it to be legal to take with you. We learnt that when we are on a boat we have to wear a life jacket, we also learnt that sea life or even birds can die due to the rubbish in the sea. The birds or sea life think that it is food for them and decide to eat it. I learnt that if the fishes that you are catching are salt water fishes you have to bring salt ice with you and I also learnt that you have to use a wet towel to pick up the fishes you catch because you can damage the fishes scales. On top of the scales there are a coating and you can rub the coating off with your hand and this injures the fish.

We listened to the songs that Minstrel made and also followed the actions/choreography that Mrs. Minstrel made up to the song. We did weros (Challenges in Maori) and answered questions. Who ever got the correct answer got a poster of Hiwi the Kiwi and a sticker along with it. This was a cool opportunity our school had.

Texting Dialogue | Writing

LI: To create a dialogue using a text messege app.
Dialogue is a conversation between two or more people. We had to chose two people from our plays that we made last week and create a dialoge using a messeging site. We did this in partners and my partner was Alayah. We chose the two characters Lisa and Lucie from our play. The dialogue was about how a blue Leprechaun stole Lucie's jewelry. The Leprechaun left some clues around Lucie's bedroom. Lucie asked Lisa to come over to her house so they can find the missing jewelry. I enjoyed this activity with Alayah.

SSR Selfie

LI: To summarise and retell a text.

I read a book that was called 'Furtunately the Milk'. It was a really interesting and hooked me into reading it to read some more. It is about how there was no milk and Davids dad went to the shops to buy some but he encountered an alien and then the alien took him. Read the book to find out the end of the story. I enjoyed reading this interesting book.

Fractions Of Sets | Maths

LI: To calculate fractions of sets.

Fractions are things divided into equal peices. We did this in our maths book and took photos of it to show proof. We had five slides to complete with 3-6 questions. I did stuggle with figuring out these questions but I eventually got it. I enjoyed this activity.

TOPES | Writing | Narrative

LI: To identify the stucture of a Narrative.

The structure of a narrative is TOPES (Title, Orientation, Problem, Events & Solution/Resolution). The purpose of a narrative is to teach a life lesson about somethings to keep you safe. In our writing group we made a google presentation. We didn't finish it but we are going to add on it every week until the finished product. We are writing a narrative/play for Mr. Wongs group to present the play.

Basic Facts Boxes

LI: To remember basic facts.

Today I decided to do my basic facts boxes. I did the speed demon challenge. My time was four minutes and thirty nine seconds. I did pretty good and hope I do better in the future. I enjoyed this activity.

Tau | Maori

LI: To learn the seasons in Te Reo Maori.

The word for 'seasons' in Maori is Tau. Spring, Summer, Autumn & Winter also have their own words. In spring there is flowers grow, in summer the sun shines bright but there are chances of rain, in autumn the leaves fall down & in winter some parts of the world snow. We used the Te Ara website to learn these words.

Information Gathering | Making Connections

LI: To make connection and to record facts in your own words.

The types of connections are: Text to Self, Text to Text & Text to World. We read a story about Kakapos and then had to complete a slide about information gathering. After we have showed our information gathering slide we had to finish the making connections DLO. We had to be specific on our connections. I went back for feedback a bunch of times. I enjoyed this activity.

Planets In Maori | Inquiry

LI: To learn the names of the planets in Maori.

The suns name in maori is: Te Ra. Mercury is Aparangi, Venus is Kopu, Earth is Papatuanuku, Mars is, Matawhero, Jupiter is Parearau, Saturn is Rongo, Uranus is Wherongo and Neptune is Tangaroa. This week in inquiry, with Ms. Anderson, in partners, we created a DLO showing the translations of the solar system in Maori. My partner was Sakina. In our DLO we included attributed images of the planets, interesting facts and the translations in Maori. After we created the DLO we started to record it. Sakina and I struggled to say the Maori names and recorded a few times because we were struggling, but we finally finished it. I enjoyed this activity with Sakina.

Friday 7 June 2019

Commenting

LI: To give feedback to someone.

I decided to comment on Angelica's blogpost about SSR Selfie. I asked her if she enjoyed the activity. I told her that she should add a learning intention. I enjoyed commenting on her blogpost.

Basic Facts Boxes

LI: To remember basic maths facts.

I did the speed demon challenge up to 20 and my time was 3 minutes 12 seconds. I think I have gone faster and next time I want to complete is by the time 2 minutes. I enjoyed this activity.

SSR Selfie | Electricity

LI: To summarise and retell a text.

Electricity is a form of energy. The book that I read was 'Electricity'. I learnt the meaning of two new words which were: Static energy & circuit. I enjoyed learning new information about electricity.

Maths | Fraction

LI: To relate fractions with division.

Fractions is when you divide something equally. The task we did was to fill in the slide and complete each task. We were practising fractions. We first did an activity were we had to write down a bunch of words then try and activate our prior knowledge to difine the words. I enjoyed doing fractions.

Reading | Ants

LI: To record facts in your own words.

I was gathering information to understand the main points of the story about army ants. We had to fill in this slide and after we were done we had to show the teacher then blog it. I didn't know that female ants do all the word and worker ants make a bridge with themselves for the colony to cross over.

Kiwi Can

LI: To follow our word.

Our theme is integrity and our topic is responsibility. Integrity is when you do the right thing. Responsibility is when you are in charge of something you have to keep it as the owner left it.

Energizer:
Our energizer was called '21'. We had to count to 21 without going the circle. The first time we did it we got up to 21, but we went back to each other which made it easier. So Miss. Mack added a new rule which was: You can't go back to the same person.

Chatchphrase:
Our chatchphrase is: "Responsibility is what I am, And that's the way of kiwican!".

Activity:
Our activity was called 'Goals'. We had to write down three things you would want to achieve at the end of the term. I wrote down:
1. Treating people with respect.
2. Getting 100% on the must do task list.
3. Picking up rubish even if it is not mine.

Reflection:
I enjoyed this weeks session for Kiwi Can and hope I can acomplish the three goals I made.

Kei Te Pehea Koe? | Maori

LI: To learn the feelings in Maori.

Kei te pehea koe means how are you? We did simple feelings. For the DLO we had to make an image are use an image to describe what the feeling is. I enjoyed this weeks session for Maori.
