Hiwi the Kiwi | Fishing for the Future
LI: To be responsible in the sea when fishing.
Hiwi the Kiwi came to our school to teach us how to be responsible when it comes to the sea/ocean. We learnt about the legal fish size and how a Snapper fish has to be 30 cm long for it to be legal to take with you. We learnt that when we are on a boat we have to wear a life jacket, we also learnt that sea life or even birds can die due to the rubbish in the sea. The birds or sea life think that it is food for them and decide to eat it. I learnt that if the fishes that you are catching are salt water fishes you have to bring salt ice with you and I also learnt that you have to use a wet towel to pick up the fishes you catch because you can damage the fishes scales. On top of the scales there are a coating and you can rub the coating off with your hand and this injures the fish.
We listened to the songs that Minstrel made and also followed the actions/choreography that Mrs. Minstrel made up to the song. We did weros (Challenges in Maori) and answered questions. Who ever got the correct answer got a poster of Hiwi the Kiwi and a sticker along with it. This was a cool opportunity our school had.
