About:
Mae Jemison was born on the 17th of October 1956 in Decatur, Alabama, US. Mae was an American engineer. She became the first African American woman to be an astronaut. On September 12th 1992 Mae became the first African American in space when the space shuttle Endeavour took her and six other astronauts on 126 orbits around the world (Earth). The next year Mae left NASA and went on to teach at Dartmouth College. Mae also founded her own company which took the name as the 'Jemison Group' inc. Mae Jemison had a good impact on other people's lives, by becoming the first African American woman to be an astronaut which made other women that are a different race or has a different tone to their skin to keep going forward.

For this activity we were asked to pick a person we think have a positive impact on other people's lives. I chose Mae Jemison. Mae was the first African American woman to be an astronaut and to go in space. Mae also started her own company which helped other people get driven into science and more. I enjoyed this activity.

  1. Ahiahi Mārie Farzana,

Congratulations on making it to the end of week 3! You have absolutely smashed through the programme this summer, you should be so proud of yourself :)

I really like that you have chosen to write about Mae Jemison for this weeks “choose your own activity”. I have never heard about her so I enjoyed learning a little bit about her today, I think it is so cool that she was the first african american woman to travel to space!

I can see that you have really tried to write about Mae in your own words from the information you have gathered about her, just remember that when you use information online that you credit back to the source.

Did you know that she was only 16 when she started studying chemical engineering at Stanford University?

What made you want to read/ learn about Mae?

  3. Hi Farzana,
I liked how you picked someone that not many people would know about, even though Mae Jemison was the first African American woman to go into space. Would you want to go to space like she did?

  4. Wow, Mae Jemison sounds fascinating! I've never heard of her before, but you've got some really good information on who she is. Mae's story is very inspiring, judging by the huge impact she made! Lovely to hear that you've enjoyed the activity, well done!
