Week 3 | Day 4 | Activity 1: Medical Mavericks (Four Points) | Summer Learning Journey

Malala Yousafzai (Nobel Peace Prize Winner):
Malala Yousafzai was the Nobel Peace Prize winner for 2014. Malala was born on the 12th of July 1997 in Mingora, Pakistan. She won it because she was fighting for womans rights for education in poor countries and for her struggle in defeat of kids and young people, also for the right of all children to have a good education. Malala survived an assasination commited by the Taliban in 2012 and was unfortunately shot in her head. After she had survived the assasination she had a speech and talked about why education is very important for people (mostly women). She was the youngest person to win a nobel prize and she shared her prize with Kailash Satyarthi.

For this activity we were asked to look at the list of the Nobel Prize winners and pick a person who won a prize. When we picked the winner we were instructed to write 5-10 sentences about them. I chose Malala Yousafzai. This activity was inspired by Florence Nightingale and Marie Curie. Florence was trained to be a nurse and when she was an adult she was sent to Turkey during the Crimean War to take care of the injured soldiers. Marie was the first person to use a X-Ray to look at the human body and because of this she won two nobel prizes. I enjoyed this activity.

  2. Hello Farzana!,
What great set of information you have provided about Malala Yousafzai. She is an awesome person who has fought for educational rights for females. It sure looks like you have put a lot of effort into these SLJ activities. If you won the Nobel Peace prize, what would it be for?

    Well Done!

  3. Good Afternoon Farzana,

Tino pai on a fantastic post this afternoon about someone who has won a nobel prize. I really like that you chose Malala Yousafzai, she has done such great things over her life and I can’t believe she is only 22. I didn’t know that she is the youngest person to win a nobel prize, so that’s something new.

I really like how much detail you have put into this post, you have done a great job at re-writing the information you have found and making it your own so well done!

What inspired you to choose Malala to learn and write about today for your blog post?

    Have a lovely afternoon,
    Kueni :)

  4. Hi Farzana,
I found it interesting that Malala survived a shot to the head because that would not usually happen, where was she shot? Also, who is Kailash Satyarthi?

  5. Hello Farzana! Malala is a very strong person, I was moved just listening to her story...What she's been through is unbelievable yet she still has the pride and confidence to share it with others. I'm glad this is the way she's chosen to co-ope with what's happened to her, because she has REALLY earned that award. Very inspiring...Great job Farzana!
