Improving Skills | Multiplication

Multiplication is many groups of the same size. Algorithm the process of mulitplying, adding, subtracting or dividing using place values.

To use a written algrothim for multiplication, people usually multiply the ones together, then the ones to the tens. For example: 28 x 15, is an equation outside of the basic facts. This can make it hard for people, but if they multiply 8 by 5, it is in the basic facts. 8 x 5 = 40. After this, multiply the 8 and 10 from the 15. 8 x 10 = 80. Multiply the 20 by 5. 20 x 5 = 100. Next, people multiply the tens to the tens. 20 x 10 = 200. Then, add them together. 200 + 100 + 80 + 40 = 420.

Fact families are the different equations that can be used in the same set of numbers. If someone knows what 2 x 8 is then, they know what 8 x 2 is because they are fact families. 2 x 8 = 16, 8 x 2 = 16, 16 ÷ 8 = 2 and 16 ÷ 2 = 8.

The lattice method of multiplying is very easy. The lattice method is similar to the algorithm. The lines between the squares seperate the ones, tens and hundreds. It is a quick way to solve a multiplication problem.

Multiplication is an easy way of adding the same number repeatedly. Multiplication is a good skill to have because it can make things quick and easy.
