This week for inquiry Mr. Ogilvie invited his friend who had recently started a business. Her name is 'Michal'. Michal is passionate about stopping foodwaste, so she created an app which is called 'FoodPrint'.
FoodPrint is an app for people to buy food that is 50% off. All the food people have bought from FoodPrint would've gone to waste if it weren't for the customers. Food that has been wasted causes climate change. Climate change is when the weather changes due to the waste. Michal started the procedure about two years ago and her app launched six months ago. Her app is environmental friendly. Overproduction means that 1/3 of food produced is wasted every year. 1.3 billion tonnes of food goes to landfills, then decays and makes the methane gas which helps climate change grow larger. Michal explained that there is an atmosphere that is getting warmer and warmer because of climate change. It can get to the point where it is so hot that fires starts, hot weathers will begin and the weather will just change every little while. 20 million loaves of bread has been wasted in NZ a year. Which would waste natural resources, labour and money.
Michal's enterprise is more in the service category and is a social enterprise. A social enterprise is when you make profit (money), help people and also help the planet. Michal explained to us that finding a name is not as easy as we thought it would be. This is because if you are making an enterprise or business as an app then when people download it the name can't be too long because it will cut some text and it won't identifiable. To make the FoodPrint logo she had to chose one of four designs that she thought standed out as original or identifiable. Michal chose a logo that was a vegetable but what she liked the most about it was that different people think that the vegetable are different vegetable or fruits.
Michal talked about Promoting, Advertising and Marketing are one of the things that grow the business by hooking in new people to use the app. There is also self promotion through social media and presentations. Michal has talked about her journey to many other people too.
Currently there are 17,401 people that have used the app and there are 250 food stores that are working with FoodPrint. This year 2019 food industries have made food that will be enough for 10 billion people. Which will be in 2050, which is also in 31 years.
Michal's mission is to reduce the amount of food that is being wasted. Michal is helping the enviorment and society. I think Michal's business is going to be trending as most people care about climate change and food waste. FoodPrint means the enviormental impact of food.
Wow Farzana, you really learnt a lot from this this week - great job and fantastic write up!
