Advertising | Frames

LI: To make an advertisment to showcase our product.

This week for the gala day we were making advertisments to showcase our product which are frames. We got into groups and made posters or brochures. My group also made a video advertisment. There are differences between brochures and posters. Brochures have more text and they are given out to people to read whereas posters have little text and people look at it for less than one minute. Our advertising is a brochure and a short video ad.

Just Frame It | Inquiry

LI: To create a company name, logo and make frames.

This week for the gala day we were finishing our frames, creating our company name and making a logo. The name for our business is 'Just Frame It'. To get this name in groups of three we went through a process of using anything we could to come up with ideas then after we got many name ideas we eliminated the ones that were trademark or that we didn't like and picked one out of many. After we put our name idea as a class we chose what name we liked the best and it was Just Frame It. The name my group and I came up with was 'Inframable'. We got the idea from inflamable and developed it to Inframable, but we didn't get picked. Each class made something to sell for the gala day.

LI: To practise doubles in tennis.

This week for our fifth session of tennis we were practising doubles. A double is when you get into partners and play against another partner. We were practising to move around inside the boundaries and we had to look at where the ball was going. The person closer to the ball should hit the ball. Both players on each team should have turns at hitting the ball.

Commenting

LI: To make a smart comment.

Today I decided to make a positive comment on Ong's blogpost about reading. He had his DLO in the middle of the blurb blocking the text. His DLO was good and his blurb could use more discription but it was a good blogpost. I also did a comprehension task for reading.

Link to Ong's blogpost - https://pbsongmi.blogspot.com/2019/11/breaking-news-witches.html?showComment=1574359447538#c8555042677819221679

SSR Selfie

LI: To summarise and retell a text.

This week for ssr selfie I read a book that was called 'Matilda'. Matilda is a book about a yound girl that is very smart and loves to read books. Matilda finds out that she has super powers. The illistrator is Quentin Blake. I like the book because it is interesting and I like Roald Dahl.

Basic Facts Boxes

LI: To learn basic maths facts.

Today I did basic facts boxes. Basic facts boxes is when you time yourself and answer one hundred basic facts questions on addition. When you are done with the basic facts questions then you stop the stopwatch and that is your time. I did the speed demon challenge up to twenty. The time I got was three minutes and twelve seconds.

Paper Plane Measurements | Graphs

LI: To use statistical and scientific methods to study the effect of wing span and area on lift.

This week for maths we were making predictions of how far our bigger planes will go using graphs that we made. We made a spreadsheet to record our measurements. With our measurements we started on making the digital graphs. We also had to calculate the average of the flight distance. To calculate the average you have to add all of the numbers up and then divide that by how many times you tried it and that is your average.

Narrative | Planning

LI: To identify parts of a narrative.

This week for writing we were planning our narrative. In our groups we had to plan one male and female character and pick which character was the best. The characters that we chose were Patrica who is 19 and doesn't live in reverse and Jaerell who is 70 years old and lives in reverse. We had to also had to decide on four settings for our narrative.

Coffee Shop | Supply & Demand

LI: to balance supply and demand for a profit.

This week for inquiry we were learning how to balance out the supply and demand for financial value. To do this we played the Coffee Shop game.

To play the coffee shop game you had to start with $30. The goal of the game is to get as much money as you can in two weeks (14 days). First you need to buy the ingredients. The ingredients are: Cups, Coffee, Milk & Sugar. You can also adjust the price. At the top right hand corner there is a temperature scale that tells you the temperature of the current day and what time it is. Once you have bought the ingredients to your liking you can start the day. There are many different types of icons that will pop up above the customers head that have different meanings. If you hover over the icons they will tell the meaning. After one day all of your milk will spoil and it will show your reputation at the end of the day. After one day you will repeat the process except you will only need to purchase the ingredients and adjust your price depending on the weather. Then you can start your day and repeat the process. We had to make a slide with screenshots of each day with the results of the day.

Kiwi Sport | Tennis

LI: To learn how to volley and serve.

This week for kiwi sport we were practising the backhand and forehand volley. A volley is when you hit the ball without letting the ball hit the floor. We were also practising how to serve. For a serve you should hit the ball diagonally. If you are right handed then with your left hand put the ball under your left ear and with the right hand rest the tennis racket on your shoulder. We threw the ball up and hit the ball with the racket. With serving it has to be an over-arm hit.

Kiwi Can | Respect | Patience

LI: To learn how to be patient.

This week for kiwi can our topic was patience. The definition of patience is: To wait without getting annoyed or frustrated. One of the things that Mr. Semanu explained was that: With patience there comes rewards and consequences.

Energizer-
Our energizer was called 'Snap & Escape'. In partners we had to position our right hand flat towards our partner and point the index and middle finger down to our partners hand. When Mr. Senamu said a key word we had to try to catch our partners index & middle finger like a venus fly trap and then try to not get caught with your middle and index finger.

Activity-
Our activity was about patience. We got seperated into a boys group and a girls group. The girls got into one line and the boys got into one line. When Mr. Senamu squeezed our shoulders we had to pass it on to the person in front of us and the first person to get the cone on the chair got a point. The first group to get 10 points won.

The Twits | Roald Dahl

LI: To novel study and complete comprehension task.

This week for reading we had to read to our expectations. My expectation was from 'Mr and Mrs Twit go off to buy guns' to the end of 'The furniture goes up'. We also had to complete a comprehension task and I chose to do the 'write and design a newspaper report'. I made a newspaper report about the twits atrocious actions. The twits kill any species of birds just to eat bird pie for their Wednseday supper. They have been forcing a family of four monkeys to stay upside down for many hours. They commit many more wicked actions.

Commenting

LI: To make a smart comment.

Today I decided to comment on Room fours advertisment of UberEats. Room four wanted to teach Stan Walker (Mercy) how to make a healthy pizza so they didn't need to spend money on fast food. I like Mercy's humor in the beginning of the video.

SSR Selfie

LI: To summarise and retell a text.

Today I decided to do SSR Selfie. I read a book called 'Refuge'. The book was about two siblings named Faris and Jadda. They are both refugees but the book is based on Faris. The book is about Faris and Jadda traveling to Australia on a ship. Faris as the older sibling takes care of Jadda. I enjoyed the book because it was really interesting.

Basic Facts Boxes

LI: To remember basic maths facts.

Today I decided to do basic facts boxes. The time I got was three minutes and fifty four seconds. I chose to do the speed demon challenge up to twenty on the addition. I think that I could do better next time.

Graphs | Paper Planes

LI: To use statistical and scientific methods to study the effect of wing span and area on lift.

This week for maths we were learning how to make graphs to study the effect of lift when the wing span and area differs. We first did the measurments to see how far the planes go. We also needed the measurements for the data. We each made our own graphs on paper and got a tutorial by Mr. Wong. We got a tutorial of how to make the digital graph. The type of graph that we made was a scatter chart/graph.

Setting Discription | Writing

LI: To investigate figurative language.

This week for writing we were learning about showing and telling sentences. We had to pick a setting and tell the reader about the setting for the 'Telling' text box. For the 'Show' text box we had to try to make the discription better by using the five senses and figurative language. Figurative language helps the reader keep guessing what you are talking about but we also had to keep a balance of figurative language and simple, compound and complex sentences. The five senses are: Touch, Taste, See, Smell and Hear and the figurative languages are: Simile, Metaphor, Personification, Hyperbole & Understatement.

Business & Enterprise | FoodPrint

LI: To understand the procedure to start and create a business.

This week for inquiry Mr. Ogilvie invited his friend who had recently started a business. Her name is 'Michal'. Michal is passionate about stopping foodwaste, so she created an app which is called 'FoodPrint'.

FoodPrint is an app for people to buy food that is 50% off. All the food people have bought from FoodPrint would've gone to waste if it weren't for the customers. Food that has been wasted causes climate change. Climate change is when the weather changes due to the waste. Michal started the procedure about two years ago and her app launched six months ago. Her app is environmental friendly. Overproduction means that 1/3 of food produced is wasted every year. 1.3 billion tonnes of food goes to landfills, then decays and makes the methane gas which helps climate change grow larger. Michal explained that there is an atmosphere that is getting warmer and warmer because of climate change. It can get to the point where it is so hot that fires starts, hot weathers will begin and the weather will just change every little while. 20 million loaves of bread has been wasted in NZ a year. Which would waste natural resources, labour and money.

Michal's enterprise is more in the service category and is a social enterprise. A social enterprise is when you make profit (money), help people and also help the planet. Michal explained to us that finding a name is not as easy as we thought it would be. This is because if you are making an enterprise or business as an app then when people download it the name can't be too long because it will cut some text and it won't identifiable. To make the FoodPrint logo she had to chose one of four designs that she thought standed out as original or identifiable. Michal chose a logo that was a vegetable but what she liked the most about it was that different people think that the vegetable are different vegetable or fruits.

Michal talked about Promoting, Advertising and Marketing are one of the things that grow the business by hooking in new people to use the app. There is also self promotion through social media and presentations. Michal has talked about her journey to many other people too.

Currently there are 17,401 people that have used the app and there are 250 food stores that are working with FoodPrint. This year 2019 food industries have made food that will be enough for 10 billion people. Which will be in 2050, which is also in 31 years.

Michal's mission is to reduce the amount of food that is being wasted. Michal is helping the enviorment and society. I think Michal's business is going to be trending as most people care about climate change and food waste. FoodPrint means the enviormental impact of food.

Maori | Korero

LI: To understand and translate more about the Maori language.

This week for Maori we completed a google document and we had to ask 'Nō Hea Koe?' to other people in our group and they had to find the place they were born in and translate that into Maori. For me it would be 'Āwhekenetāna' which is 'Afghanistan'. We also had to add the macrons to the Maori word. Korero translates into 'conversation/discussion'.

Kiwi Sport | Tennis

LI: To learn how to serve in tennis.

This week for kiwi sport we were learning how to serve the tennis ball. We started with a recap of what we did last week for kiwi sport. Then we did rally's as the warm up.

For the rally we got partners and started on it. To do a rally we had to hit the ball to our partners and you can't let the ball hit the ground. I used the fronthand and backhand technique to help me keep the ball up. Coach Steven added a challenge in it. The challenge was to try and hit the cone that was on the floor. We then practised our serving.

To serve we learnt that we should always serve the ball diagonally. If you are right handed then with your left hand put the ball under your left ear and with the right hand rest the tennis racket on your shoulder. Then proceed to throw the ball up and hit the ball with the racket. It has to be an over-arm hit.

Kiwi Can | Respectful Communication

LI: To learn about respectful communication.

This week for kiwi can we carried on with the respectful communication topic. We discussed the different ways of communication. There are many ways such as: Digital communication, In-person communication, Body language, Sign language and Communication through letters.

For our energizer we played a tournament game. We had to get into partners and on the count of three we had to hold up any amount of fingers in one hand that we wanted to and we had to count the amount of fingers all together. We then talked about respectful communication and how we would talk in different situations.

After that we played our activity. Mr. Semanu put down some cones and he put some music on. When the music was on we had to dance and if we weren't dancing we were out. When the music turned off then we had to grab a cone, sit down and put it on our head. If you didn't manage to do that then you are out.

The Twits House | Roald Dahl

LI: To novel study and complete comprehension tasks.

This week for reading we had to read to our expectations. My expectation was from 'Hugtight Sticky Glue' to the end of 'Still no bird pie for Mr. Twit'. The comprehension task I chose this week was to describe a setting. I described the twits house. I also made a picture of the twits house. The twits backyard is really big but the twits make no use of it. The twits own a family of four monkeys and keep them inside a cage. There is the house that is windowless and a shed beside the house. At the end of their backyard there is a big dead tree. Mr. Twit uses that tree to capture any type of bird to eat for his bird pie.

Maori | Ataata | Korero

LI: To understand and translate more about the Maori language.

This week for Maori we were learning about why the macron is used in the spelling of Maori words and why Maori people ask other people 'Where are you from?' (Nō Hea Koe?). Macrons are used to indicate mid-tone use in the sentence which differs from the expected sound others might think. It can also change the meaning to the word. Maori people ask where we are from so that they can make a link with other people and also to make a link with that person’s family, understand where they are from or where they had grown up and also to link with their whanau and their tribal group. My group and I found this information on the videos. Ataata translates to 'video'. We also did another google document and we had to ask 'Nō Hea Koe?' to other people in our groups and they had to find the place they were born in and translate that into Maori. Korero translates into 'conversation/discussion'.

Legal Images | Cybersmart

LI: To understand the legal use of images.

This week for cybersmart we were learning about legal images. We were doing a challenge. Our challenge to complete was to find an image by pressing insert on a google drawing, then pressing image then we searched what image we wanted. Finding an image and discribing what we did to find the image was our challenge but Mr. Wong added another challenge and it was to attribute the image too. We attribute images to give credit to the owner or photographer of the image.

Basic Facts Boxes

LI: To remember basic maths facts.

Today I decided to do basic facts boxes. I did the speed demon challenge up to twenty. The time I got was three minutes and nineteen seconds. I think I did pretty good.

SSR Selfie

LI: To summarise and retell a text.

Today I did ssr selfie. The book I read was 'Magnetism'. It was about how magnetism works and what it is. The most interesting thing I learnt was that the Earth is a giant magnet.

Inquiry | Businesses

LI: To learn what a business is.

This week for inquiry we had to fill in a google sheet of the two categories that we divided the businesses in. We had to divide the group of businesses to goods and services, then we had to divide from the groups into more categories. After we divided the groups we stuck the papers onto a bigger piece of paper in the categories we divided in them.

Origami Planes | Measurement

LI: To use statistical and scientific methods to study the effect on wingspan and area on lift.

This week for maths we chose one of two plane designs and we had to calculate the wing area, wing span and fuselage length. The wing span for my plane was 18.8 centimeters. The wing area for my plane was 24,934 milimeters squared and my fuselage length was 29.6 centimetres. We had to make a diagram showing our measurements, plane and the parts of the plane. We got taught how to fold the plane by Mr. Wong.

Writing | Figurative Language

LI: To investigate figurative language.

This week for writing we were learning about figurative language. There are five different figurative languages. They are: Simile, Metaphor, Personification, Hyperbole & Understatement. A simile is when a comparison is made using the words 'like' or 'as'. A metaphor is when a comparison is made without using 'like' or 'as'. Personification is when an object or idea is given human abilities. A hyperbole is over-exaggerating something to have more emotion. An understatement is language with less strength than anticipated (opposite of hyperbole). We had to make a slide deck explaining the meanings of the figurative languages and examples of them.
