Commenting Thread

Today I commented on Te Raumati's blogpost about time. I started the comment thread. The commenting thread process is to look at talking about the learning they have blogged about. We use open questions to keep the conversation going. My comment can be seen in the image below.

SSR Selfie

Today I completed the SSR Selfie can-do. The objective of the SSR Selfie can-do is to learn how to summarise or retell a text. The book I read was called: '1918'. The book was very interesting. This book was a fictional story but it had factual information.

LI: To summarise and retell a text.

Basic Fact Boxes

Today I completed basic fact boxes up to 20. The objective of this challenge is to get quick at answering basic fact questions. I answered the equations in 2 minutes and 21 seconds.

LI: To remember basic maths facts.

Figurative Language | Hyperbole & Personification

I learnt how to use hyperboles and personifications to describe images.

First, I gave two examples for hyperboles. A hyperbole is an exaggeration. One of the example I made was: "The waterfall released all the ocean's water into a lake".

I did this activity and made up the figurative language, by looking at the images and identifying the situation.

After making two examples for the hyperbole slide, I gave another two examples for the personification. A personification is giving an object or item a humain trait. A personification I made was: "The P38 Lightning screamed with power as it zoomed off into the sky".

I found some of the images hard to come up with a personification and hyperbole.

LI: To use hyperbole and personification to narrate events.

Time

Time is the sequence of events taking place. There are non standard and standard ways to tell time.

Singing a song, is a non standard way of keeping track of time. It could be in different rhythm or pace which can cause it not always be accurate.

Listening to a song is always the same. The song could be two minutes. It is an exact measurement of time.

People use sand clocks to keep track of their showers. Sand clocks are sand inside of an hourglass. The time will differ if their is a lot of sand or a little bit of sand.

Food Preservation | T-Chart

Food containers are used for storing food, but they have different requirements depending on the storage needed.

Plastic Container
Plastic containers are made with firm but bendy plastic, there are many different shapes and sizes. Some advantages for plastic containers are: they are stackable, they have lids, and the size is the person's choice. Some cons are: they are usually overpriced, the big containers are usually meant for big fridges, or freezers.

Mason Jars
Mason jars are glass containers. Some pros are: they are good for pantry storage, come in different sizes, it's easy to see the contents inside of the mason jars. Some cons are: they are made of glass (which is easy to break), the lids are metal (which can cause them to get rusty).

Gastronorm Pan Containers
Gastronorm pan containers are stainless steel containers. Some advantages are: they keep things warm, they are suitable for oven cooking, they are suitable for buffets. Some cons are: the edges are extended (which might make them difficult to place in places, they have no lid.

Conclusion
The three containers are best for three different situations. Food is often stored for the following situations: storing left overs in the fridge, storing preserved food like fruit or pickles at room tempature, and storing food that needs to be kept warm for buffets.

Plastic containers are best for storing food in a fridge, because they have lids making them stackable and the person buying them can chose the size of the containers.

Mason jars are best for storing fruit or pickles, because they are airtight and they are the only type of containers suitable for things like that.

Gastronorm pans are best for storing food for buffets, because they keep the food warm and they can fit a lot of food in it.

Commenting Thread

Today I replied to Bella's comment.  I agreed with her reply. She asked me if there were any other interesting things I've learnt by science. I gave her a list of interesting things I have learnt. I also ended the comment thread because I think I have learnt a lot from the information from the comment thread.

Time

Time identifies when something happens.

There are many different units of measuring time. They are: seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, decades and ect.

If people want to measure time, the object they are measuring time with has to be consistant. Making a hole at the bottom of a plastic cup, putting water or sand inside of it and then letting the water or sand flow out is another mechansm for measuring time.

There are many other mechanisms that measure time but these are only some of them.

Food Storage & Preservation | Work In Progress

We used the reciprocal reading process to understand the pros and cons of food storage containers.

We started to read the description of the container to do the reciprocal reading process. The reciprocal reading process helped me identify what the container's purpose is.

Once we read the text we identified the pros and cons using a T-chart. We used the images to think about the challenges and what we needed for the challenge. By doing this, we found the cons.

We then moved on to another piece of text and repeated the process.

This is a work in progress blog post.

Metaphor

Metaphors are a comparison between two things that have a similar trait.

Metaphors is a kind figurative languages. Figurative language is used to describe in a way that gives a simple property but also creates a facsinating image.

An example for a metaphor is: She is a thorn in my side. The object is the girl. The comparison is the thorn. The meaning is that someone is very annoying.

Another example for a metaphor is: The boy has a heart of a lion. The object is the boy. The comparison is the heart. The meaning is that the boy is courageous.

People can describe many different things using metaphors like: a persons voice, colours, flavours, a persons appetite, the weather, and more.

Volleyball | Interschool

On Wednesday, some students from our school went to the Barfoot & Thompson stadium to participate in the volleyball interschool with Mr Ogilvie (who organised the trip).

The year 5/6's first game was against St Pius. We tried our best but unfortunetely lost by 3-2. The year 5/6's second game was against Ruapotaka. We lost by 14-8. Our third game was against Point England. It was a very close match and we lost by 8-6. Our fourth game was against Stonefields. We lost by 15-3. Our last game was against Tamaki Primary. We fortunately won 10-8.

The year 7/8 group one's first game was against Tamaki Primary and they fortunately won 17-12. Their second game was against Panmure District. They tried their best and they won by 30-16. Overall, they won three games and lost three games.

The year 7/8 group two's first game was against Tamaki Primary. They also tried their best but lost by 29-16. They ended up losing all of their games but still enjoyed the day.

Thank you to Mr Ogilvie for oganising the trip. I had a lot of fun. Some things I could improve on is: to get good at setting the ball, passing the ball to my team and hitting the ball over the net.

Cook Island Language Week

LS1 learnt about the Cook Island language.

I completed the months of the year which is one of the many Cook Island language tasks. In this task, I got an understanding about the pronunciation and spelling of the months of the year.

In the google presentation, I wrote down the months of the year in English and in the Cook Island language. I also provided a video of myself pronouncing the months so that people can copy me and pronounce the months of the year.

I enjoyed this activity and learnt many things about the Cook Island language.

Commenting Thread

Today I replied to Bella's comment. She gave me a very good answer and I think it was very detailed. She asked me if I know anything about the building blocks of science. I replied with a yes and gave more information. I asked Bella if she liked science and why.

SSR Selfie

Today I completed the SSR Selfie can-do. The objective of the SSR Selfie can-do is to learn how to summarise or retell a text. The book I read was called: 'The World's Most Amazing Battle Facts'. The book was very interesting and I learn many new things about battle facts. One thing I learned was that: In WWI a pitbull terrier names Stubby was awarded two medals for warning toops of a gas attack and for holding a German spy until American troops arrived.

Venn Diagram | The Dippy Dinner Drippers | Space Food

Compare and contrast is an activity that looks at the differences and similarities between two things. The Dippy Dinner Drippers is a book about the Dippy family being very messy eaters. The book Space Food is about a class planning a trip to go to Mars and finding out how to preserve food.

The similarities between the two books are that: the two books are fiction, they both have messages, they are both narratives and they both talk about food.

The differences for The Dippy Dinner Drippers are that: it talks about how eating messily will attract animals, all of the book is fiction, it ends with a cliffhanger and ect. The differences for Space Food is that: it talks about the different ways of preserving food, the book has factual information, it talks about bacteria and viruses and ect.

Comparing and contrasting can help to understand and synthesize the information across the texts.

Similes

Similies compare two things using 'as ... as' or 'like'. Similies are figurative language.

When the simile uses an adjective, people use 'as'.

When the simile uses a verb, people use 'like'.

Similes help people to compare two things with figurative language.
