Time, Past & Future | Rugby World Cup

LI: To apply inquiry, literacy and numeracy to learn about the RWC.

For this activiy we had to answer eight questions on the DLO. The Rugby World Cup happens every four years so we had to multiply in fours. To work out the answers I used my knowledge of multiplication. Example: When will the 11th Rugby World Cup be held? The questions were about the time, past and future. I was born between the 2007 and 2011 Rugby World Cup. I think that it is scary that in thirty four years time I will be fourty four years old.

Basic Fact Boxes

LI: To remember basic maths facts.

I did the basic facts boxes up to twenty and chose to do the speed demon challenge. My time that I got was four minutes and fifty seven seconds. It wasn't really that hard there were a lot of questions so I got that time. I think I could do better next time.

Venn Diagram

LI: To apply inquiry, literacy and numeracy skills to learn about the RWC.

For this activity we had to find as many differences and similarities between NZ and Japan as we could. I learnt many similarities and differences between Japan and New Zealand. My group and I researched as much as we could to find information. It was hard to find similarities between the two countries because they are very different to each other.

Rube Goldberg Machine

LI: To apply knowledge of simple machines to create a Rube Goldberg machine.

Over the past weeks, in groups LS1 had to make a Rube Golderg machine. We used the 6 simple machines. We tried to put as many simple machines as we could but we only managed to get four out of the six. The simple machines were: Wheel & Axle, Lever, Pulley, Incline Plane, Wedge & Screw. The challenges were turning a Chromebook on, helping Mr Wong roll dice and hitting a putter. Our scenario was turning on the Chromebook.

On the last week our group had managed to get the machine finish. We used four different types of simple machines a wheel and axle, pulley, incline plane and a lever. For the wheel and axle we used a car. For the Pulley we used a string from a yo-yo and latches from the window. For the incline plane we used a marble roll down a ramp. And used the dominoes as the lever.

The most challenging task was creating the machines and trying to apply the 6 simple machines and communicating with our group to know what is going on and how we could help. I'd change another way of putting dominoes up without it falling because we always had to keep setting it up again and the amount of sellotape we used.

Positions | Rugby World Cup

LI: To apply inquiry, literacy and numeracy skills to learn about the RWC.

For this task we had to match the position of rugby players to their photos. I didn't know that much about rugby players so I did some research about them, found out how many caps they've played to make the information more detailed and the positions they played. Richie McCaw is the most capped rugby player of all time.

Rugby World Cup | Rugby Events

LI: To apply inquiry, literacy and numeracy to learn about the RWC.

For this activity we had to find three historical events about the Rugby World Cup. I picked 1987 which was when the first rugby world cup was held because New Zealand won the first rugby world cup. For my second event I picked 2011 games which was when New Zealand won their second time at Eden Park. The last event I picked was in 2015 where New Zealand won for the third time. This   record topped all the teams. We had to add images for each event to give more information.

World Time | Rugby World Cup

LI: To apply inquiry, literacy and numeracy skills to learn about the RWC.

For this activity we had to find out the times of the countries. AM stands for 'ante meridiem' which is latin for before midday. PM stands for 'post meridiem' which is latin for after midday. If a country or continent was big then it would have different times for different places like Canada, Australia, USA and many more countries. It is called East coast, West coast, North coast & South coast. The time also differs when day light saving starts in different countries (Eg: Australia, NZ). When people cross the equator the time will change.

Commenting

LI: To give people feedback.

Today I decided to comment on Sulia's blogpost about faulty reasoning. I like how Sulia added a lot of information in her blurb. I asked her if she enjoyed the activity. Sulia had put a capital letter in the wrong place so I asked her if she could correct that.

LI: To summarise and retell a text.

I read a book called 'The Mouse Island Marathon' from Geronimo Stilton. Geronimo Stiliton takes part in a marathon. The main characters are Geronimo, Thea, Trap & Benjamin Stilton. The author & of this book is Elisabetta Dami. I like the book because it is funny, interesting and it is also full of suprises.

Basic Facts Boxes

LI: To remember basic maths facts.

I did the basic facts boxes up to 10 and completed the addition boxes in three minutes and sixteen seconds. I do think that I could do better next time. I chose to do the speed demon challenge. Next time I will do basic facts boxes up to twenty or try the brain box challenge.

Advertising | Thneed

LI: To create an advert using knowledge and skills we have learnt.

This week for writing we had to make an ad. Our product that we had to advertise was a thneed from the Lorax. We used our knowledge of what other advertisments have and applied them on ours. We had to make this advertisment in a group. In my group there was Bella, Charlize, Alayah & Angelica. We chose to use rhymes for the advertisment because Dr. Suess makes rhymes.

Faulty Reasoning | Reading

 LI: To understand faulty reasoning.

This week for reading we were learning about faulty reasoning. There are five different types of faulty reasoning. They are: Illogical / Simplified Assumptions, Circular Reasoning, Over-Generalization, Biased Argument & Contradiction. We had six tasks. The first task was matching the example and definition of which faulty reasoning we think it was. The second task was to read a piece of text and find out the type of faulty reasoning it was. For the third task we had twelve sentences and we had to try and think about what faulty reasoning they were. For the fourth task we had to read another piece of text and pick out some sentences and write what we think they were. The last two activities we did the same thing but with different texts.

Kiwi Can

LI: To cope with challenges.

We learnt how to face our challenges and experience them. We looked at three different types of challenges which were: Physical challenges, Mental challenges & Social challenges. I got into a group of three. We picked a type of challenge in the physical challenges, mental challenges or social challenges category. On a piece of paper we got we had to write what we picked, our emotion when we face the challenges and how we can cope with the challenge.

Artwall | Art

LI: To earn and look after money by creating with maths.

This week for maths we are finishing our artwork and putting our art on the wall. I was doing geometric abstract art and I used different sized rectangles for my artwork. The amount of area that I had to work with was 825cm2. My height was 25cm and my width was 33cm. I used warm and cold colours in a pattern starting from red, then light blue, then a peachy colour & dark blue. I like how my artwork turned out.

LI: To give a person feedback.

Today I commented on Liletina's blogpost about her maths work. She created a bomb grid. I liked how she added the directions to lead us to the end. I didn't understand the last sentence for her blurb. Besides that it was a good blogpost.

Basic Facts Boxes

LI: To remember basic maths facts.

Today I did the basic facts boxes up to 10. My time I got was 4 minutes and 57 seconds. I did the speed demon challenge. I think I can do better next time. It wasn't really hard but there were a lot of questions to answer.

LI: To summarise and retell a text.

Today I read a book called 'Building blocks of Science, Energy'. It explained what energy was, where energy comes from, the different forms of energy, how people use energy & the effect of energy use. I enjoyed reading this book.

Synthesis | FlipGrid | Too Much Technology

FlipGrid Link - https://flipgrid.com/81a84b1e

LI: To identify the main ideas in a text.

This week we got a new article to read. Our article was called 'Too Much Technology'. It was about how people all over the globe are using too much technology and how using too much technology can negatively impact our future generations. We had to do the prior knowledge oval first then read the article. After that we had to do the new information oval then do the questioning DLO. Next we had to fill in the new understandings oval then do some research to see if the facts given on the article were true or false. After that we wrote our script for our flipgrid which will explain whether we agree or disagree with the article. I agree with the article because people are using too much money and time on technology instead of their friends or families. Technology can cause severe mental health issues to the users. They could also be in the 'zombie state' which is when they stay on their devices too long at night which causes them to not sleep.

Art | Maths

LI: To earn and look after money by creating with maths.

This week for maths we had to finish our art. I first did the measurments for the size of our paper then I chose the colours. I used warm and cold colours in a pattern. I used different sized rectangles to get this. I like how the art turned out. I chose geometric abstract art because I thought it would look good and it is easier then the other art commissions. My width was 33 centimetres and my height was 25 centimetres. The lines that are in grey are 1 centimetre for width and the coloured parts are 3 centimetres for width. I enjoyed creating my artwork.

Advertising 3.0 | Writing

LI: To learn about television advertising.

For writing we were looking at television advertising and video advertising. The people who make the advertisment use celebrities to make people buy their stuff. We had to link three advertisments that famous celebrities that are from New Zealand are featured in. I chose Stan Walker for Ubereats, Julian Dennison for Lynx & Jacinda Ardern for New Zealand off the map. After that we did the critical analysis slide deck. For this we had to watch the advertisment on the slide deck and answer the questions. Lastly we had to find an advertisment that we thought was pretty cool. I chose the Brotherly Love - Coca Cola advertisment. We had to answer the questions on the slide too.

Kiwi Can

LI: To deal with challenges.

We need to practise dealing with challenges to deal with them easily in the future. LS1 group A went to the kiwi can session. We first did a recap on what our topic and theme was. Our theme was: Resilience and our topic was: Dealing with challenges.

Then we did our energizer which was called 'Balloon Pop'. To play balloon pop we had to think of a food starting with the first letter of our name and we had to throw a ball up in the air and say: (example): 'Penelope likes pear' then someone had to catch the ball and repeat the process but with their name.

For our activity we played 'Bus Stop'. For the activity we had to explain the challenges in the pictures. We had to write down what we thought was the challenge based on the picture and how they might feel.

Our catchphrase was: "Kiwi Can says, when there's a challenge, don't go over it, don't go under it, just go through it and just do it.

LI: To give a person feedback.

Today I commented on Faus blogpost about the four areas of the print design rules. I like how she arranged her layout and colour. Her DLO is really good. I asked her is she enjoyed making the DLO because she didn't tell that in her blurb. I enjoyed commenting on Faus blogpost.

Basic Facts Boxes |

LI: To remember basic maths facts.

Today I did the basic facts boxes and the challenge I did was speed demon. The time that I got was 3 minutes and 21 seconds. They weren't hard equations but I did need some time to complete it. I think that I could do better next time.

LI: To summarise and retell a text.

Today I read a book called 'Hamlet'. It was a very interesting Shakespeare story. It was about a prince named Hamlet, he was acting mad. I really like Shakespeare stories.

Maths | Area & Perimeter

LI: To measure length and calculate perimeter and area.

This week for maths we were learning how to calculate area and perimeter for our art wall. We chose a type of art that includes maths knowledge. I chose the geometric abstract art. We first had to measure the art walls to divide it in half for the other groups. Each one of us had to put up a piece of artwork. After measuring we were on to sketching our plan. We also had to find out the measurments of our sketch. I used the rectangle shape for my sketch.

Advertising | Food Gimmicks | Slogans

LI: To learn about persuasive tools in advertising.

This week for writing we were looking at advertising. We first did the slide of POV and other examples. We found many mascots but chose four mascots. We were working in groups of 3-4. In my group there was Fau, Charlize and Afatia. After that we went on to the slogans. We found many slogans of the categories. Next we chose some food gimmicks that people use to get more people buying their products. There were many gimmicks that we found. For the last activity we made our own slogans but it had to be about our school.

Wheel & Axle | Print Design Rules

LI: To apply the print design rules.

For cybersmart we had to make a DLO following the four areas of the print design rules which are: Colour, Layout, Text & Composition. We had to check our work of with Mr. Wong. The things we had to have in our DLO was the definition and more.

Archimedes Screw | Simple Machine

LI: To identify a simple machine.

A screw is a simple machine that transfers soft and liquid things from a low point to a high point. It is bent on an axle depending on the force. On Tuesday we were introduced to a new simple machine which was an archimedes screw. We did an experiment. Our experiment was that we had to make a screw out of a pipe and a stick. We managed to get some water out of the bucket by twirling the stick on an angle.

Kiwi Can | Challenges

LI: To deal with challenges.

The year 5's went to room seven to participate in our kiwi can session. We had a new topic which was 'Dealing with Challenges'. A challenge is a difficult task. We did an energizer were we had to listen to what Ms. Mack was saying and do the action. There were seven actions which were: 'Jump in, jump out, spin around, touch the ground, look up and look down'. It was difficult because Ms. Mack tricked us multiple of times. After the energizer we talked about challenges and what was challenging to us. Then we went to our activity were we got a puzzle and had to create an X shape or a + shape with shapes. We had to think outside the box. No one completed the puzzle but my group got close to making the X shape. Play the puzzle.

Pointless, Painful Physical Education | Synthesis

Flipgrid: https://flipgrid.com/81a84b1e

LI: To seperate a fact from an opinion.

For reading we had to read a new article and make a flipgrid on whether you agree or disagree with the article. Our article was called 'Pointless, Painful Physical Education'. We first filled in our prior knowledge then we had to read the article. After we read the article we had to categorise the QAR questions into one of the 'Right there, think & search, author & me and on my own' boxes. Next we had to answer the questions that we categorised. Then we filled in the last two ovals. Lastly we filmed our flipgrid.
