Maori History

Today Whia Ode came to our classroom to teach LS1 group A about the Maori history. Whia Ode first read us a story about 'In the beginning'. It was about how the god Tane seperated Rangi and Papa who are gods. Then Whia Ode showed us a sand art video of a person drawing In the beginning story with sand and his hands.

She taught us a song about when Maori tribes sang the soldiers a song when they came back to their islands. Whia Ode then told us about the founder of New Zealand which was Kupe. We learnt how Kupe and his wife found New Zealand. One day Kupe saw birds migrating south and he thought that there must be land south. So Kupe and his wife set sail to explore the south. They took Coconuts and Bananas on their journey because Coconuts have water inside of them. They used their hands, stars and birds to know where they're going. Kupe's wife saw land and showed it to Kupe.Istead of Kupe's wife getting the title Kupe got it because he was a male and Kupe's wife was a female.
